Primary 5-6 Mental Health Workshop
Today the children of Primary 5 and 6 were having fun learning about how to look after their mental health. They discussed the different types of emotions they can feel, both positive and negative and how to deal with them in different situations.
They enjoyed taking part in activities to help them learn and understand their needs and emotions and how these can affect their moods. Through group discussions the children were able to map out helpful ways in which to resolve different emotional situations and learned to set aside any unhelpful thoughts they may have that would negatively impact them.
Thank you to Hazel from Loughshore Care Partnership for providing the workshop and to Sarah from Motus Learning for delivering the workshop as part of the Loughshore Minds Matter project.
The themes covered include:
· What are emotions and how to deal with difficult emotions like sadness, shame and worry.
· Resilience skills - how to bounce back from difficult situations.
· Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - challenging negative thoughts.
· How the brain works / how I can make rational decisions.
· Mindfulness - how to reduce worry and increase calm / how to deal with panic attacks
· Empathy and social skills - how can I be a good friend and maintain healthy relationships. How to deal with loneliness, bullying, and how to support a friend going through a difficult time.
