Outdoor Learning Day 2023 in Primary 1-3
Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement to inspire and celebrate outdoor learning and play.
The children in P1-3 were very excited to be part of this national day of outdoor learning. The theme for the day for our class was 'The Great Barrier Reef' which added to our overall topic of Splish, Splash, Splosh.
The children began the day with a walk to the shore where they became professional photographers and used their iPads to capture some beautiful images of Lough Neagh. Then then had a go a scavenging and gathered up a range of natural materials including stones, twigs, plants and flowers.
Once back at school the children then had a go at being musicians. They listened to sounds from under the sea, learnt a new song and even added in their own beat using a range of musical instruments.
Next up it was time to be mathematicians. The children began by researching fish that lived in the Great Barrier Reef and then painted them according to size. They also had a go at some labelling.
Just before lunch it was time to become inventors. The children were set a challenge to build a raft / boat to help the bear to float across the water. There were lots ideas put into action and many of their boats were able to float to the delight of the children.
After lunch the children ended the day as artists where they worked together in their class groups to create a collaborative piece of art using natural materials to create their own barrier reef.
The children had an amazing day bringing all their learning outside and I sure the memories and skills developed today will last for many years to come.
