Maghery Local History
Our children in Primary 6 and 7 invited some of the more senior members of the community to the school this week, to help them with their WAU topic on Location. It was a privilege to have Dermot Robinson, Jim Robinson and Noel Laverty talk with the children and answer their questions about Maghery in the past. The children were treated to many fascinating and humorous stories about attending school in 1940’s and 50’s, the history of the Maghery football team and how it was an amalgamation of Maghery Shamrocks and The Geraldine’s, the Columbkille Pipe band and what it was like growing up in a rural area before electricity. Our guests brought along objects from the past for the children to explore, which included: a 100-year-old reading book, a menu from one of the local hotels, a magazine, old photographs and many more interesting items. Lifelong memories were created from this event, which our children will cherish and take with the into adulthood.
